The Foreign Languages and Literature programs is a premier master's degree program that received approval from the Academic Degrees Committee of China’s State Council in 2011.
In 2005, the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Ningbo University was approved as a Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences in Zhejiang Province, specializing in "Foreign Languages and Literatures Literature." In 2010, the school added a Master's degree program in Translation and Interpreting (MTI), and the "English Language and Literature" sub-discipline successfully passed the provincial key discipline evaluation. That same year, it was also approved as a Zhejiang Provincial University Innovation Team, focusing on "English Sea Literature and International Exchange." This discipline is a top priority discipline in Zhejiang Province's "12th Five-Year Plan," a first-class discipline in the "13th Five-Year Plan," a key discipline for the construction of key universities in Zhejiang Province, and one of the five "Peak Disciplines" at Ningbo University.
Tu Guoyuan, a distinguished Professor, serves as the head of our Master's Degree Program. The faculty includes 30 professors, over 40 associate professors, and more than 50 doctors. Among them, we have:

●1 talent from the Zhejiang Provincial "Five Batches" Talent Program in Communication and Culture System;
●1 Teacher of the Year among Zhejiang's higher education institutions;
●2 professors from the "Yongjiang Scholars Program" in Ningbo;
●11 experts selected for the Zhejiang provincial "151 Talent Project";
●6 scholars from Ningbo University's "East Zhejiang Scholars/Pao Yu-kang Scholars Program";
●8 doctoral supervisors (including cooperative supervisors).
In recent years, our discipline has secured 49 projects funded by the National Social Science Fund, notably including one major project, four key projects, and one Chinese Academic Translation Project. Additionally, we have successfully obtained 27 grants from the Ministry of Education and 35 from the Zhejiang Provincial Philosophy and Social Sciences Planning Office. Our faculty members have published over 160 papers in esteemed journals indexed by A&HCI, SSCI, and CSSCI, covering all major foreign language journals both domestically and internationally. Moreover, over 100 works, including translations and compilations, have been released by reputable national publishers.
Our discipline's accomplishments are highlighted by two national teaching awards and more than ten ministerial and provincial teaching and research honors. It is recognized as a premier discipline in Zhejiang's "13th Five-Year Plan" and "14th Five-Year Plan," and holds a unique position as the sole foreign language discipline among the inaugural batch of distinguished disciplines in key provincial universities in Zhejiang. In the fourth round of discipline assessments organized by the Ministry of Education, our discipline achieved a B-level rating, indicating its solid academic standing. Additionally, in the 2022 rankings for soft science disciplines, our discipline secured the 23rd position nationwide, placing it in the top 10% of all institutions evaluated.
Currently, the Foreign Languages and Literatures discipline offers six academic research directions (degree programs), namely English Language and Literature, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Translation Studies, Japanese Language and Literature, German Language and Literature, and Comparative Literature and Cross-cultural Studies. Additionally, it provides a professional degree program for the Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI), with specializations in English-Chinese translation, English-Chinese interpretation, and Japanese-Chinese translation.
