Our Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics program, accredited as a master's degree granting entity by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in 2003, stands on the shoulders of giants. Anchored in the esteemed "Foreign Languages and Literatures" research hub for humanities and social sciences within Zhejiang's higher education institutions, and bolstered by Zhejiang's top-tier discipline status, we house both the Theoretical Linguistics Research Institute and the Applied Linguistics Research Institute. Our mission is to nurture elite professionals in foreign language linguistics, fueling local economic progress.

Over the past half-decade, our program has flourished academically, with more than 70 research papers gracing the pages of prestigious domestic journals, nine monographs published, and an impressive portfolio of research projects, including eight funded by the National Social Science Fund and fifteen by provincial and ministerial bodies. This robust research activity has been recognized with over ten accolades, notably the Award for Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences from both the Ministry of Education and the Zhejiang Provincial Government.

At the helm of our program is Dr. Yu Shanzhi, an esteemed professor with a wealth of expertise. Our faculty is a powerhouse of knowledge, comprising 12 professors and 16 associate professors, with 18 holding doctoral degrees. Our academic vanguard includes luminaries such as Professors Yang Chenghu, Luo Siming, Lin Lihong, Wu Yanjing, Wang Hongyang, Miao Lixia, Chen Jianping, Lei Jun, Zhou Lan, along with Associate Professors Zhu Xiujie, Huang Danwang, Cong Yingxu, Zhao Li, Yu Lingli, Huang Bei, and Dr. Zhang Jiao.

We offer three dynamic research pathways for our students:

1. General Linguistics (English Linguistics)–Delving into the core principles and theories of language.

2. Applied Linguistics–Exploring the practical applications of linguistic knowledge in real-world contexts.

3. Contrastive Linguistics–Analyzing and comparing languages to uncover their unique features and similarities.
